It’s interesting to think about the positive and negative aspects of the NOI on Malcolm X. The NOI got Malcolm to stop acting out in prison and got him to start taking learning seriously. He became a great speaker and debater after he converted. However, it also made him meet/make deals with the KKK and white nationalist groups, and for a time he was complicit in the NOI’s capitalist ventures, exploiting its members. He also wanted to work politically, but the NOI wasn’t for that.
